This pendant is based on a real Beothuk caribou bone carving, thought to represent either (or both) the structure of the foot of a seabird and/or the tail of a whale. Both of those creatures are thought to have been very powerful spiritual symbols to the Beothuk people, who believed the afterlife was contained on an island across the vast Atlantic ocean that surrounds Newfoundland. Pendants such as these were found among the buried remains of their dead, which shows how significant and sacred each piece was. The coordinating earrings combine polymer clay with jadeite beads, representing the Atlantic. Buy these pieces in my shop!
